"Moonshine", the Albino Alligator

"Moonshine", the Albino AlligatorAlbino animals have a rare genetic condition in which the pigment melanin is absent from the animals coloration. Albinism occurs naturally in the wild and in many different animals. True albinos have red or pink eyes because blood shows through the colorless irises. Albino alligators cannot survive in the wild because they cannot camouflage themselves with their surroundings. Also, because the lack of pigment in their skin leaves them extremely photosensitive, they are easily sunburned.

Moonshine is one of fewer than 100 alligators in the world and can currently be seen in the Alligators: Dragons in Paradise exhibit at the Flint RiverQuarium Adventure Center.
